First Week of Public Daycare

James completed his first week of public daycare today. It has been a tough week for everyone. It began easy enough the first two days with James attending daycare as though he had been there forever. He made some new friends the first two days, one named Blake and we aren't sure yet of the other little boys' name.
Then Wednesday came and James began to get clingy with Mommy and started crying when she left. That evening, James cried from the time Mommy picked him up til the time he went to bed. He woke up in the middle of the night screaming. We had finally gotten him sleeping through the night, and now this.
Thursday, was not much better. Daddy even paid a visit to the daycare to check up on James (without letting him see Daddy). James appeared to be doing fine on the playground and seemed to be having a good time playing AMONGST the other kids, but not really with them. I guess this is common for his age. The daycare director assured Daddy that everything was ok, and that James had been doing fine - taking 2 hour naps and eating well. Daddy explained the concerns with James' change in attitude and personality at home in the evenings. James again woke up in the middle of the night crying out for Mommy.
On Friday, Daddy dropped James off and it took one of James' teachers prying him away from Daddy in order for Daddy to leave. Daddy left heartbroken seeing James like that, but he understood that was what was best for helping James adjust. At lunch on Friday, Mommy and Daddy stopped by to check up on James. He was sleeping and again we were told that he is doing well. The director said that they would try James in the 2 year old room in the afternoon since he was used to being with Morgan who was older.
It had become obvious that James misses Morgan and Miss Anita, but he is too young to verbalize his feelings. Morgan's mom has told us that Morgan has asked about James everyday and that she is struggling to adjust to daycare as well. James will see Morgan in swim class tomorrow (Saturday) and we have made plans for a playdate with Morgan after swim class.
While we knew that there could be some adjustment issues, James is pretty easy going. He does need his structure, but otherwise he gets along with just about everyone.
And then Friday evening came. And Mommy and Daddy began to realize the true nature of James' recent behavior -- his nose started running. It appears that James has come down with a cold. Something else we knew would happen with the increased interaction with other children, but now it all became clear -- James is becoming sick and when James is sick he is very clingy and his behavior deteriorates from his usual happy self. It seems apparent now that James began getting sick on Wednesday and it has progressively gotten worse. He is not running a fever and we are not at the point of seeing the doctor, but James definitely does not feel well.
James may still have some adjustment issues, and we know that he does miss Morgan and Miss Anita. We will have to see how he does once he gets to feeling better. Hopefully, James will not miss swim class tomorrow and hopefully we will not have to cancel his playdate with Morgan.
